All schools must provide swimming instruction either in key stage 1 or key stage 2.
In particular, pupils should be taught to:
- Swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres.
- Use a range of strokes effectively [front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke].
- Perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.
- All children in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 will take part in swimming lessons throughout the year either on a termly or half termly basis, one lesson a week.
All children are expected to take part in their swimming lessons; therefore a full swimming kit including towels and swimming caps will be required. Girls are expected to wear a full one-piece swimming costume, no bikinis. If your child has to wear goggles in the swimming pool, they will need to bring a separate note signed by parents on the first week so that it can be handed to the swimming instructors.
