Math Enhancement

At St Gregory's Catholic Academy, we believe every child can become a confident and successful mathematician. Our mathematics curriculum is designed to develop fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills while fostering a lifelong love of Maths.

Our Curriculum

  • Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS): Children develop early mathematical understanding through practical, play-based experiences following the Early Years Foundation Stage Statutory Framework and Early Learning Goals.
  • Years 1–4: We teach using Power Maths – White Rose Maths Edition, providing a mastery approach that develops deep understanding through carefully sequenced lessons.
  • Years 5–6: We follow the White Rose Maths Scheme of Learning, ensuring pupils build secure mathematical knowledge and confidence ready for secondary school.

Our teaching follows the Concrete, Pictorial and Abstract (CPA) approach, enabling children to understand concepts through practical resources before moving to pictorial representations and abstract methods. Lessons encourage mathematical discussion, reasoning and problem solving alongside the development of fluency.

Enrichment Opportunities

Throughout the year, pupils have opportunities to:

  • Celebrate National Number Day and other Maths events.
  • Take part in Times Tables Rock Stars competitions and whole-school challenges, NSPCC NUMBER DAY, England Rocks and many more.
  • Enjoy practical Maths investigations and real-life problem-solving activities.
  • Use a range of mathematical equipment, including counters, Base 10, place value charts, Numicon and other manipulatives.
  • Complete reasoning and challenge activities to deepen their understanding.
  • Apply mathematics across the curriculum in science, computing, design technology and geography.

Supporting Every Child

We believe all children can succeed in mathematics. Teachers provide timely support, appropriate challenge and regular assessment so that every child can make excellent progress. Through a mastery approach, pupils are encouraged to explain their thinking, make connections and develop resilience when solving mathematical problems.

We also value working in partnership with parents and carers by sharing calculation methods, home learning opportunities and ideas to support children's mathematical learning at home.

National and Online Maths Events
Throughout the year, we participate in a variety of national and online mathematics events, including:

Power Maths Active Learn - games online  (New to pupils)
Maths Week England – a national celebration of mathematics with live events, investigations, puzzles and whole-school challenges.
National Numeracy Day – promoting confidence and positive attitudes towards mathematics through engaging activities.
NRICH online mathematical challenges, investigations and webinars, enabling pupils to develop their reasoning and problem-solving skills.
White Rose Maths free seasonal and national challenge activities.
Times Tables Rock Stars national and inter-school competitions.

Participation in local Maths Hub initiatives and enrichment opportunities where available.

Working with Our Community

We actively seek opportunities to work with local schools, our Maths Hub and other educational organisations across Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire to provide additional mathematical experiences for our pupils. These may include maths competitions, STEM events, workshops and collaborative learning opportunities that inspire children to see mathematics in the wider world.

By providing these enrichment opportunities, we aim to develop confident, curious and resilient mathematicians who enjoy challenge, think deeply and recognise the importance of mathematics in everyday life.
